The vertebral column, also known as the spinal column, spine or backbone, is the core part of the axial skeleton in vertebrate animals. The vertebral column is the defining and eponymous characteristic of the vertebrate endoskeleton, where the notochord found in all chordates has been replaced by a segmented series of mineralized irregular bones called vertebrae, separated by fibrocartilaginous intervertebral discs. The dorsal portion of the vertebral column houses the spinal canal, an elongated cavity formed by alignment of the vertebral neural arches that encloses and protects the spinal cord, with spinal nerves exiting via the intervertebral foramina to innervate each body segments.

முள்ளந்தண்டு நிரல் அல்லது முதுகெலும்புகள் அல்லது முள்ளெலும்புகள் என்பது முதுகெலும்பிகளின் முதுகுப் புறத்தில் முள்ளந்தண்டு வடத்தைச் சுற்றி ஒன்றோடு ஒன்று இணைந்து அமைந்திருக்கும் அசையக்கூடிய எலும்புகளின் தொகுதியைக் குறிக்கும். இவ்வெலும்புத் தொகுதியானது முள்ளந்தண்டு வடத்திற்குப் பாதுகாப்பைக் கொடுப்பதுடன், உடலுக்கும் உறுதியை வழங்கும். இந்த எலும்புகளின் வரிசையானது பொதுவாக மண்டையோட்டுப் பகுதியில் ஆரம்பித்து, இடுப்பெலும்புப் பகுதியில் முடிவடையும். இவை ஒன்றன்மேல் ஒன்றாக வரிசையாக அசையக் கூடியவகையில் அடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும். தனித்தனியான முள்ளந்தண்டு எலும்புகளுக்கு இடையில், மெத்தைபோன்று மென்மையான இழையமான கசியிழையத்தினால் ஆன தகடுகள் காணப்படும். இத் தகடுகள் விலங்குகள் அசையும்போது 'அதிர்வு உறிஞ்சிகள்' போலத் தொழிற்பட்டுச் சேதங்கள் ஏற்படாமலும் பாதுகாக்கும்.
